As Aloha Foundation Uganda prepares to launch its pilot for the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) program, we took a vital step toward success by empowering the educators who will lead it.
In August 2024, we held a 14 days intensive training in Apac District, bringing together the key people at the heart of education in our community. Over several days, the training served as both a learning space and a rallying point for a shared vision
Who Was Involved
- 32 teachers from 4 selected schools participated in the training
- 11 mentors (our dedicated field facilitators) engaged deeply in preparation and practice
- District leadership was strongly present, with both the District Education Officer and Inspector of Schools attending and showing great support
The local government’s endorsement and participation signalled that this initiative is rooted in and led by the community.
A special thanks goes out to TaRL Africa and our TaRL Africa fellow- Rhoda Sakala who traveled from Zambia to join us in Uganda and offered dedicated guidance to the participants.
From the early planning stages to day-to-day facilitation, Rhoda worked closely with our team to:
- Co-develop contextualized training materials
- Support the coordination of sessions and hands-on activities
- Ensure fidelity to TaRL Africa’s core principles while adapting to our local context
- Mentor and coach facilitators as they practiced lesson delivery
The training covered all the core components of the TaRL methodology, including:
- Assessment of learners’ literacy and numeracy skills
- Grouping learners by ability, not grade
- Engaging activities to boost foundational learning
- Daily planning and structured pedagogy
- Simple monitoring tools to measure progress over time
Through simulations, teach backs, and guided peer work, educators walked away with practical tools—and a powerful shift in mindset.
